Scrum for Beginners: A Simple Guide Without the Jargon

Scrum in One Sentence

Scrum is a way for teams to build things in short cycles (called sprints), checking in regularly to make sure they're building the right thing.

The Three Roles (Plain English)

Product Owner: The person who decides WHAT to build. They talk to customers, prioritize features, and make sure the team isn't building stuff nobody wants.

Scrum Master: The person who makes the PROCESS work. They're not the boss — they're more like a coach who removes obstacles and keeps meetings productive.

Development Team: The people who actually BUILD the thing. Designers, developers, testers — anyone creating the product.

The Sprint Cycle (How Work Actually Happens)

1. Sprint Planning (start of sprint): Team picks what to build in the next 1-4 weeks. They estimate each task (usually with Scrum Poker).
2. Daily Standup (every day): 15-minute check-in. "What did you do yesterday? What today? Any blockers?"
3. Sprint Review (end of sprint): Show what you built to stakeholders. Get feedback.
4. Sprint Retrospective (end of sprint): Team-only meeting. "What went well? What didn't? What should we change?"

Common Terms (Translated)

• User Story: A feature described from the user's perspective. "As a customer, I want to reset my password so I can log in."
• Backlog: A prioritized to-do list. Product Owner owns this.
• Velocity: How many story points the team completes per sprint. Used for planning, not for performance reviews!
• Definition of Done: A checklist of what "done" actually means. Code reviewed? Tested? Deployed? Documented?

You Don't Need to Be Perfect

Here's what most beginners don't realize: nobody does "pure Scrum." Every team adapts it. The goal isn't to follow rules — it's to ship valuable stuff consistently. Start simple, add process only when you need it.
