What Is Scrum Poker? (The Simple Version)

Scrum Poker — also called Planning Poker — is how agile teams estimate how much work something will take. Instead of one person guessing, everyone on the team votes at the same time using numbered cards.

Think of it like this: your team is looking at a new feature. The product owner explains what they want. Then everyone secretly picks a number that represents how complex they think it is. On the count of three, everyone reveals their card at the same time.

A Real Example

Let's say you're building a login page. Simple, right? Just email + password + a button.

The junior developer thinks: "Easy, 2 story points." The senior developer thinks: "Wait — we need validation, error handling, forgot password flow, rate limiting... this is an 8."

When they reveal their cards, the 2 and the 8 create a conversation. The senior explains the hidden complexity. Everyone learns something. That's the magic of Scrum Poker — it surfaces knowledge gaps instantly.

The Fibonacci Numbers
